The Brine Reaches OG

Ten thousand islands. Eight empires that all lie about why. And a ship that is finally yours. The Brine Reaches are a sun-blasted tropical sea at the height of the age of sail: an age of tall ships and black powder, of treasure fleets and letters of marque, of fantasy peoples who crossed an ocean to fight the same old wars on a brighter, deadlier shore. Elves, orcs, dwarves, giantborn, and stranger folk crew the fleets. Sorcery is rare enough to be feared. And the deep ocean, every sailor will tell you, is genuinely haunted. You begin where every captain begins: with a hull beneath your feet and a crew at your back, however modest, and the sea open in every direction. What you do with it is yours to decide. Trade sugar and rum and run contraband past the blockades. Take a letter of marque and hunt prizes for a crown, or take them without one and hang for it if they catch you. Chase the legend of El Dorado up the serpent rivers, where the gold is real and the guides are not what they seem. Dive the wrecks, chart the deep waters no one returns from, and claw your way up from a leaking rowboat to a frigate, a galleon, a ship-of-the-line. Win a port and hold it. Lose a crew and answer for it. Sign your colors to one of the great powers, or burn them and answer to no flag at all. You might start as a freshly commissioned naval officer, a chartered privateer, a pirate deckhand with ambitions far above your station, a debt-ridden merchant, a fevered treasure-hunter, an exile with no name left to lose, an orc war-captain, or a clan-raider sailing for blood and glory. Whoever you are, the Reaches do not care where you came from, only what you do once your keel hits the water. Your name runs ahead of you into the next port, built of every prize you have taken and every promise you have kept or broken. Eight powers carve up the warm water between them. The high elves of the Auremar Dominion still rule the gilded heart of the sea, the richest and most beautiful and most certain of their right to it. The human Albion Imperium expands by contract and gunboat, meaning to inherit everything the elves let slip. The orc-and-goblin Iron Court treats war as the highest art and will arm anyone with a grudge against the Dominion. The dwarven Tidewater Compact builds the best hulls in the world and quietly owns everyone's debt. The Free Compact preaches liberty to all comers; the giantborn Stormholt and the birdkin Skyward hold the storm-lashed passages between them; and the Brethren of the Tide, the great pirate confederacy, keep a berth for everyone the empires chewed up and spat out. Older and stranger things hold the green interiors and the river-mouths, and they do not love visitors. Your ship is a living thing, with her own hull and sails, her own crew and their fragile faith in you. Keep her mended and fed and she carries you to legend. Lose her, and the sea is very wide and very cold. The people who sail with you are not scenery. Some become your right hand. Some become more than that, if you let them. All of them remember how you treated them when it counted. The Reaches are loud, golden, and alive with rum, spectacle, and possibility, and the darkness runs underneath rather than over the top. Most sailors never see it. The high elves are dying, though they will kill anyone who says so, and the gold their fleets carry home is no longer wealth but life-support, feeding something old and unnamed beneath the waves. In the deep water every captain fears, the Drowned Court waits, older than any elven memory and bound up in the same buried thing. None of it is in your way unless you go looking. The question of what the whole gaudy, golden machine is really feeding is one nobody is in a hurry to ask. The good ones get rich. The great ones get remembered. That is your sea now. Make your name on it before the deep decides to close it.
