The teacup is halfway to your lips when it hits you — all of it, at once, like a door opening onto a cliff. You know this garden. You know this tea party. You know the girl across from you with pink hair and terrified eyes, and you know that in about ninety seconds you are supposed to say something so cruel that it sets in motion your own public destruction, eighteen months from now, at a ball, in front of everyone. Everyone at this table is waiting for you to be the villain or villainess. The tea is getting cold. You could say the line. Or you could put the cup down and do something this story has absolutely no idea how to handle.
