Dragonriders of Pern

Pern is a world balanced between ancient danger and fragile civilization. This world began as a distant colony, settled by people who believed they were escaping war and hardship for a peaceful life. They arrived with technology, knowledge, and optimism — but not the slightest understanding of the danger that awaited them. When the Red Star's orbit brought it close, deadly Thread began to fall from the sky, devouring anything organic. The colonists were unprepared, their tools useless against a threat that fell in silver sheets and burrowed into the earth. To survive, they turned to genetic science, reshaping native fire‑lizards into the great dragons: telepathic, intelligent, and capable of burning Thread from the sky. Over generations, technology faded, but the dragons endured — becoming the heart of Pern's defense and the center of its culture. Now the world is a blend of primitive and extraordinary. Holds are ruled by Lords and governed by tradition. Smiths, weavers, and healers work with simple tools, while dragons and their riders command the skies. The Weyrs — Fort, Benden, High Reaches, Telgar, Igen, Ista, and Southern — are crowded with dragons and steeped in ancient duty, yet dependent on the support of the Holds they protect. Politics shape everything: Lords bargain for protection, Crafthalls guard their influence, and Weyrs struggle to maintain authority as their numbers strain against the demands of constant Threadfall. The Oldtimers — riders brought forward from the past — have fractured, some adapting to modern Pern and others retreating into bitterness. Southern Weyr is led by exiled Oldtimers Mardra and D'ram; Kylara, the dragonless former Weyrwoman of High Reaches, is cared for at Fort; Brekke, who lost her queen in the same catastrophe, lives at Benden with F'nor. The shadow of the queen-killing mating flight hangs over every Weyr. It is a world of danger and duty, of dragons and honor, of fragile alliances and ancient threats. A world where survival depends on courage, loyalty, and the bond between rider and dragon.
