Avatar: the new cycle
> The Avatar returns when the Avatar is needed. Nobody has needed one in over a century. Alternates: > One past life left. She'll tell you she isn't enough. > The element is the ingredient. What you make with it is yours. > A world that learned to live without an Avatar. And then you were born. --- ## SHORT — for a card or a preview 150 years after Korra. You choose your nation and the element you were born to, and everything else about who you are. Bending here is not a skill list. The element is your material, and any technique you invent and land twice becomes permanently yours. The world spent a century without an Avatar and learned to manage. Then bending began failing — slowly, everywhere, with no cause anyone can find. And you were born. Korra is the only past life left. She'll tell you she isn't enough. --- ## MEDIUM — for a standard listing **150 years after Korra. The Avatar returns when the Avatar is needed — and nobody has needed one in over a century.** You choose your nation. Fire, Water, Earth or Air decides the element you were bending before you could write, the people who raised you, and which three delegations arrive at your presentation with an agenda. Found at five, watched every day since, and at sixteen you take control. **Bending is not a skill list.** No Fireball into Fire Spear into Fire Wall. The element is a material with properties, and anything that follows from those properties is legal — fire downward for thrust, water frozen around somebody's hands, stone read through your feet. Land it twice and **it becomes a named technique that is yours permanently**, and other benders will eventually ask to learn it. Two firebenders will never fight alike. The other three elements need living masters, and most of them will refuse you first. The portals Korra left open built this century: spirit energy instead of coal, rails and radio and spirit-lit cities, and spirits living as residents with property and grudges. **And bending is failing.** Forty years of it, patternless, no cause and no cure — which is the only reason you exist. Unalaq's destruction of Raava severed every Avatar before Korra. She is all you have. A great many serious people believe the office is finished. Prove them wrong. Or don't. --- ## FULL — for the description page **The Avatar returns when the Avatar is needed. Nobody has needed one in over a century.** It is 150 years after Korra, and the world got very good at managing without an Avatar. Councils arbitrate. Accords get signed by lawyers. A whole generation grew up regarding the office the way a republic regards a crown — respected, photographed, and functionally retired. Then bending started going out. Not everywhere and not fast. In scattered regions, with no pattern anyone has found in forty years, benders are losing it — not injured, not blocked, just diminishing and then gone. Children who should have been born benders aren't. It cannot be fought, negotiated with, or located. Whole schools have closed. And into that, an Avatar was born. **YOU CHOOSE YOUR NATION** Fire, Water, Earth or Air — and it decides far more than your first element. It sets who raised you, what the world assumes when you walk in, and which three delegations turn up at your presentation with a position already prepared. The sages hold that Raava returns where the wound is, so your birth nation isn't read as geography. It's read as a diagnosis, and the other three nations resent the implication. You were found at five. Under the Custody Accord you were raised in the open by a committee that agreed on nothing except that nobody else should have you — four tutors who disliked each other, handlers who were pleasant and never off duty, and a press entitled by treaty to your birthdays. You have never had a private conversation you were certain was private. **At sixteen, you take control.** **BENDING IS A MATERIAL, NOT A MENU** There is no unlock tree here. Fire is heat and pressure and combustion, created rather than moved. Water is mass and phase and flow. Earth is leverage, and it's everywhere. Air is pressure and absence. Anything that follows from what the element actually *is*, you can try. Fire downward from your feet for thrust. Freeze the water in somebody's clothing. Read footsteps through stone. The first attempt is clumsy and costs double — and if you land it twice, **it becomes a named technique that belongs to you permanently.** Other benders will see it, be impressed or disturbed by it, and eventually ask to be taught. The published forms are what the schools teach. They are not the limit. Inventing what nobody wrote down is the entire point. The other three elements have to be learned from living masters, and in an era with three dead Avatars in living memory — one who failed, one who is taught as a tyrant, and one who died at twenty-six in circumstances no inquiry was permitted to conclude — a great many of them will refuse you first. **
