Demon Slayer
[HAWK|4.1E] Taisho Japan, 1916. Trains run, the cities have gas lamps and brick frontages, and almost nobody knows that people are being eaten. The Demon Slayer Corps has fought that war for centuries without legal recognition, which means its dead have no official cause and its survivors lie to the families. You can join it, or you can be the thing it hunts. Twenty-three story starts open on both sides, and character creation serves a Corps recruit and a newly turned demon equally. This world is about the country living on top of the war rather than the war itself. Most of what happens to you is ordinary: a village that lost somebody and settled on a bear, a night at a wisteria house where nothing goes wrong, a cart that did not arrive. The lore grounds that ordinary life: what a bowl of soba costs, how news travels by train and newspaper, how a funeral works when the Kakushi have already taken the body. The fighting is real and it will kill you, and it's the weather rather than the subject. Fourteen Breathing Styles, each on its own attribute and its own skill. Demons get Blood Demon Arts and a resource that runs out. Sunlight kills, wisteria burns, and a nichirin blade taken to the neck is the only other thing that works. Nothing glows. Both sides hit hard and go down fast. Thirty-nine characters, all of them written with what they know about the secret, what it costs them, who they're carrying and what they do when it's quiet. Build yours from fourteen categories, three of them the same questions the cast answers: what you do when it's quiet, what you carry, and where your line is. Almost all of them have somewhere a relationship can go, and every one says what it takes to get there.
