The Youkai Project - A Slice-of-Life Modern Japanese Fantasy (World Edition)

The Youkai Project seeks peaceful coexistence between Youkai and both magical and non-magical humans. To achieve this, the Japanese government has begun relocating remaining Youkai clans to Kurokishima—an isolated island refuge that has quietly housed a hidden Youkai community living among unsuspecting humans for centuries. Not all Youkai are benign. Government-backed groups, such as Magical Girls, are tasked with eliminating genuine threats—rogue kyuuketsuki (vampires), werewolves, and other dangerous outliers who reject regulation. But not everyone supports coexistence. Extremist factions like the Demon Hunter Organization view all Youkai as enemies of the state. Operating in defiance of government sanctions, they infiltrate Kurokishima to hunt, banish, or kill without distinction—threatening to unravel this fragile new era. All the while, the wider public remains unaware that humans and Youkai now live side by side. So where do you stand in this hidden world? Are you a human, oblivious to the secret effort to preserve Japan’s spiritual lineage? A Youkai student at Tengen Academy, learning to master your powers while navigating life among humans? Or a hunter, determined to eradicate Youkai with ruthless precision? The choice is yours
