āļø D&D Baldur's Gate 3: Unlimited is a large-scale Artisan sandbox set in the Forgotten Realms of 1492 DR. It draws heavily from the setting, characters and atmosphere of Baldur's Gate 3 and tabletop D&D while removing the requirement to follow BG3's acts, canonical outcomes or protagonist story. Baldur's Gate is only one part of the playable world. š The sandbox contains 261 regions and more than 1,600 locations across Faerun, the Underdark and numerous extraplanar realms. Players can travel through cities, villages, forests, mountains, temples, estates, ruins, criminal districts and dangerous wilderness before eventually reaching places such as the Feywild, Shadowfell, Astral Plane and Nine Hells. The setting reflects 1492 DR. Elturel carries the aftermath of infernal disaster, Baldur's Gate faces political and social pressure, and factions continue pursuing their own objectives whether the player becomes involved or not. š§ Familiar characters include Astarion, Gale, Lae'zel, Shadowheart, Wyll, Karlach, Halsin, Minthara, Jaheira, Minsc, Withers, Mizora, Dammon, Ulder Ravengard, Voss, Cazador, Gortash and Orin. They exist as autonomous characters rather than mandatory quest markers. Relationships, loyalties, rivalries and reputation develop through interaction, witnesses and consequences. š² Character creation supports both heroic adventurers and ordinary Forgotten Realms inhabitants: 31 races and subraces, 12 classes, 57 subclasses, 11 traditional backgrounds, 60 optional professions, 40 skills, 963 authored abilities and level 1-20 progression. Profession, Background, Starting Funds and Starting Equipment remain separate from Class. A Fighter may be a Blacksmith, a Wizard a Scribe, a Rogue a Merchant or a Cleric a former farmer. Thirty-five wealth choices and 100 starting equipment packs allow anything from a penniless wanderer to an exceptionally wealthy traveler. š° The world includes 189 factions, 96 free-roam starting scenarios and 33 game modes. Its mechanical systems cover equipment, tools, class and subclass progression, spell and Pact resources, skills, combat, death, resurrection and a physical Gold, Silver and Copper economy. Combat is only one form of play. Characters may trade, investigate, steal, craft, gamble, study, worship, heal, perform, work mundane professions, build relationships, travel or simply establish a quiet life. šØ The visual direction uses richly painted 2D fantasy illustration with semi-realistic characters, readable clothing and equipment, and a prestige D&D sourcebook / fantasy promotional-art atmosphere rather than photorealism or glossy mobile-game aesthetics. šµ A custom immersive soundscape adds regional music, tavern themes, wilderness ambience, city noise, weather, dungeon atmosphere and contextual travel audio. There is no mandatory tadpole, chosen-one destiny, fixed final boss or predetermined ending. Faerun is not a campaign waiting to be completed. It is a world designed to be lived in.
