Improvement
Patch 2.39.0
The complete notes for this update.
New features
- Party leaders and admins can now undo the latest Studio turn during an active adventure while preserving unrelated gameplay that happened afterward.
- The Studio assistant can now inspect active adventure state and make gameplay-aware changes, including moving the party, managing NPCs and resources, and adding or editing inventory items.
- During an active adventure, players can also ask Studio to generate and apply images for maps, locations, areas, items, NPCs, and their current character. Character portraits use the established appearance from the adventure for more consistent results.
- The narrator can now inspect, change, or clear a player character's backstory while keeping semantic memory synchronized with the update. Previously saved backstories that contain a legacy Appearance section remain compatible.
- Saved "Continue as" passport characters can now be edited from the character-selection screen. Players can update gender, appearance, backstory, and personality when the character is not being used in a live game.
- Visual Novel Mode now offers a full-screen cinematic presentation on both web and native apps, with paginated dialogue, character cutouts, location art, playback controls, and staged combat animations. It also handles arrival artwork, replayed roll animations, and failures more reliably.
- You can now leave while a new game, Quick Play session, or saved game is loading. Canceled launches stop cleanly, without briefly flashing gameplay or showing late errors.
- Saves can now be sorted by "Most Actions."
- Multiplayer removal votes now let players choose between a temporary kick, which allows the player to rejoin, and a ban lasting until the room starts a new session. Vote panels and results clearly identify the consequence, and the removal dialog adds a bugged-account reason, improved accessibility, and an optional details field for Latitude's Safety team that is never shown to other players.
- Direct messages now support emoji reactions with searchable and personalized emoji choices, `:shortcode` entry, and replies that quote the original message. Players can jump to the quoted message, and emoji-heavy messages no longer hit the character limit prematurely.
- Content card menus now group related actions and provide clearer options such as "Not interested," "Interested," and "Tip Creator." Selecting "Not interested" offers Undo plus controls for muting creators or topics, tuning recommendations, and reporting content.
- Published worlds and mods now have an Updates tab where owners can post updates and readers can follow the feed. Creator Updates also appears on profiles before the first post, supports posts up to 10,000 characters, improves poll controls and formatting, and shows a Retry option when a feed fails to load.
- Creators can now define world-specific voices, assign them to NPCs and premade characters, and optionally offer them during character creation, with previews and effects for pitch, reverb, echo, EQ, distortion, compression, and output gain. Configure voices through `worldVoices` using `label`, `voiceTag`, `instructions`, `speed`, `effects`, and `exposeInCharacterCreation`, reference them with `worldVoiceId`, and set effect values with `pitch`, `reverb`, `echo`, `eq`, `distortion`, and `output`.
- AI Dungeon subscribers entering Voyage now receive a one-time welcome with options to move to Voyage Unlimited or try a limited Voyage Premium demo.
- Players can now buy 75,000 Credits for $499.99 through Stripe on the web. This Credit pack is not available through the app stores.
- Patch notes now include a Leave Feedback button. Feedback text is preserved if submission fails, and signed-out players are prompted to sign in before submitting.
- New Voyage accounts now start on a Quickstart screen showing a few recommended worlds.
Improvements
- Near Death, Dying, and Dead states are now consistent across combat, character details, narration, prompts, and multiplayer. Recovery restores 35% health when allowed, permanent party deaths receive a shared ending, and NPC deaths and defeat XP resolve more reliably.
- Travel narration more consistently includes appropriate inhabitants at populated destinations while respecting locations described as empty, uninhabited, cleared, or wilderness.
- The Narrator and Studio assistant are less likely to guess about unverified world details, and creative ideas are identified as suggestions.
- Return recaps now use a different AI model, so their wording may change.
- Gameplay messages for combat, healing, resources, and item changes now use consistent punctuation without affecting styled character names.
- Player actions, turn panels, quest updates, and action results now share a clearer glass-style presentation. Story scene images are also smaller, leaving more room for surrounding content.
- Story scene images use the full available width when opened on mobile.
- The story header progressively collapses as you scroll away from the latest content and returns at the live edge. Focusing the action input also reveals the composer more reliably.
- AI action suggestions are better sized and aligned across desktop and mobile, and they no longer compete with the abilities and action picker for input space.
- Redesigned Character, Journal, Settings, Map, and Chat icons, added clearer hover and keyboard-focus colors, improved labels, more consistent back and menu controls, and better spacing and safe-area handling.
- Mobile gameplay menus now scroll with the story composer while preserving the correct behavior during focused dialogue and Cinematic narration. Web menus also blend more smoothly into scene artwork while respecting reduced-transparency preferences.
- Dialogue cinematics now display speaker names and stage directions in larger text for better readability.
- Gameplay side panels are more keyboard-accessible, preserve unfinished drafts and selections when reopened, and release background subscriptions after closing. Voyage also loads appropriately sized gameplay images to reduce bandwidth and memory use.
- New-game setup, character creation, image-heavy screens, and the game menu now use less memory and load more efficiently. Inactive panels unload after transitions, while ongoing portrait generation remains available until it finishes.
- Streaming narration and sound-heavy sessions stay smoother by reducing repeated layout work and cleaning up audio observers after sounds finish.
- Ability cards place the Unlock action below the ability details. Keyboard users can activate it with Enter or Space, and disabled controls are skipped during keyboard navigation.
- Character abilities and inventory now provide clearer keyboard focus and screen reader descriptions, including available ability points, quantities, equipment slots, and positive or negative bonuses.
- The Journal, quest log, timeline, and inventory have refreshed rows, headings, dividers, spacing, buttons, and search fields, with clearer text and action layouts. Journal categories are keyboard accessible, and the Timeline's Open in World action is now a prominent button.
- Character creation voice previews now play consistently even when saved gameplay volume is muted. The preview player also loads only when requested, making character creation lighter to open.
- Location and travel views feature clearer headings, spacing, image previews, responsive layouts, and more prominent Travel Here buttons. Location image prompts also wrap more cleanly on mobile.
- New-game location cards now use a uniform size and no longer truncate descriptions, keeping long names and descriptions from disrupting the layout and making starting-location selection easier to scan.
- Voyage activity pages no longer show an AI Dungeon activity button in empty or error states, keeping the section focused on Voyage data.
- Voyage Studio's desktop panel controls now use directional panel icons that make it clearer which area will open or close.
- Voyage Studio now keeps the file tree in the desktop sidebar and moves chat creation, selection, and deletion into a Chats window in the message header. Header controls are also clearer and adapt better to narrow screens.
- Voyage sign-in, account creation, and password recovery pages have a new world-art design and smoother mobile keyboard behavior. New players are no longer interrupted by surveys, announcements, or push notification prompts during onboarding.
- Followers more reliably receive notifications when creators first publish Voyage Worlds and Mods, even if delivery is interrupted and retried.
- Starting Location choices now display their location artwork and crop, with distinct placeholders for locations without images and for the Random option.
- World-entry artwork now fills the loading viewport during New Game, Quick Play, and world entry flows.
- Maps pan and zoom more smoothly and responsively, with adaptive image quality, caching, nearby-region prefetching, more efficient updates for pins, labels, selection outlines, and visible content, and automatic fallback when WebGL is unavailable. Studio map drag previews also update smoothly without changing authoring state until the drag is committed.
- Map location popovers wrap long names, provide a larger close button, and adjust their positioning based on content size. Tooltips also adapt more reliably to their content.
- Starting or resuming a game now carries the save cover, title, and description through a smoother full-screen loading transition. Save loading also supports retrying after a failure, and leaving gameplay avoids a brief loading-screen flash.
- New private games start faster: the room and connection are prepared while the save and character screens load, save slots load in the background, and players reach character setup and invite setup before the full world finishes loading. Setup safely waits when world data is still needed.
- Adventures, room joins, and reconnects load faster through prioritized authentication and parallel startup work. Character option tabs now show a loading message while trait and ability catalogs arrive instead of briefly displaying incomplete choices.
- The play-choice screen can now appear while Voyage checks for an open public server. The Public Server option shows a temporary checking state, and pressing Play refreshes server availability so stale results are not used.
- Navigation feels faster by prefetching cards, profile links, main destinations, and Voyage play routes before selection.
- Interface and gameplay fonts now use more efficient files for faster loading, with improved font-weight matching and swap-based loading for Voyage icons.
- Pregame multiplayer windows now show a clearer Waiting for Players button, with the automatic-start countdown above the controls and improved text contrast.
- Public multiplayer lobbies now show live "Starting in M:SS" countdowns, get more visibility while gathering players, and allow up to three minutes for players to join. Lobby timing also remains reliable after server restarts and metadata refreshes.
- Public rooms now automatically remove inactive players after five missed turns. The Auto Kick setting clearly displays this fixed value and cannot be changed while the room is public.
- Multiplayer settings now consistently identify the party leader as the person who controls dialog advancement during Synced Narration.
- Multiplayer invite and no-access pages now show a dedicated "Preparing Voyage" screen while they load.
- Players can open their own mini profile from their party portrait on the multiplayer new-game screen, with more reliable self-identification.
- Messages now open within the Social rail on desktop and a full-screen Social sheet on mobile, with animated navigation between Social, the inbox, and conversations. Drafts persist when layouts change, and unread counts and notification muting more accurately reflect whether a conversation is visible.
- Direct messages now use a clearer grouped layout with avatars, names, timestamps, date and unread dividers, and profile badges. Follow-up messages expose timestamps on hover or touch.
- Social notifications now use more natural wording, handle long text without displacing timestamps, and provide screen-reader labels that match their visible content.
- Mini-profile cards now have profile banners, updated stats and actions, improved mobile sizing, and more accessible controls. Creator links across content and social surfaces more consistently open either the mini-profile or full profile.
- Mobile public profiles now show contextual Back navigation when viewing another player, while your own profile keeps the main mobile navigation bar.
- Discovery only shows the Unrated filter on surfaces that support unrated content, with updated guidance when that option is unavailable.
- Image-only content cards now zoom their artwork within the card frame on pointer hover, and Creator Spotlight cards no longer shift upward.
- Logged-in players can adjust safety settings, content ratings, AI safe mode, and Discovery filters without email verification. Accounts without a saved AI safe mode now default to Safe.
- Settings are reorganized into clearer, responsive groups, and search now finds individual controls, descriptions, aliases, and selectable values. Mobile results are grouped by category and open directly to the selected setting.
- Creative Mode descriptions now refer to the Assistant, and settings search recognizes both Assistant and Narrator terminology.
- Rate-limit settings searches now keep Advanced settings expanded and remove the nonfunctional collapse control while results are shown.
- The over-18 confirmation modal now stacks its buttons vertically, giving more room for long labels and keeping both actions consistently sized.
- Release Channel settings now show a shortened identifier labeled "Build." Update prompts now appear only for compatibility changes, reducing unnecessary reloads after compatible deployments.
- New players now earn streak progress without Usage grants; existing players will keep the current system.
- Daily streak claims now reset at midnight in the player's local time instead of 23.5 hours after the previous claim, with at least six hours required between claims to prevent extra claims through time-zone changes. Players can claim once per calendar day and can miss up to two days before their streak resets.
- Subscription messaging no longer suggests that returning to an old plan is limited to a testing period. The Voyage Unlimited FAQ also links to AI Dungeon's pricing page for complete AI Dungeon plan details.
- Accounts submitted for deletion under the current policy are permanently deleted after a 24-hour waiting period, while older requests keep their 30-day schedule. Deletion now more reliably cleans up user-owned data and prevents new Studio data from being created while deletion is underway.
- Studio now provides a dedicated Publish workspace for visibility, remix settings, and publication controls. On desktop, content occupies the center workspace while chat uses a resizable, collapsible right sidebar.
- Studio now provides one editor for generating, uploading, removing, and cropping location and area establishing shots and region maps.
- Creator JSON now uses `images.establishingShot.imageUrl` and `images.map.imageUrl`, with `crop` data containing `focus.x`, `focus.y`, and `zoom`.
- Creators can now select Nano Banana Pro for image generation and upload up to 2,000 moderated images per day.
- Studio image generation can reuse matching cached images for many area, item, map, and portrait requests, which can return results faster and avoids immediate portrait repeats. Generated region maps, world covers, and item images now use efficient 1000 by 1000 dimensions.
- Studio image search now ranks captions and all image tags, avoids repeated retries after a timeout, and continues gracefully when no suitable image can be found.
- The Studio worldbuilding assistant now gives shorter, more direct responses.
- Studio provides clearer guidance for AI tasks, image prompts, world backgrounds, and quest generation. Pinned help tooltips also remain open while creators interact with them.
- Studio can remain in a no-chat state after the default conversation is deleted, including across reloads and browser navigation. Sending a message creates a new conversation automatically, and controls pause during transitions to prevent conflicting chat actions.
- Creator Studio preserves the preferred file view when navigating to a field, and JSON view automatically selects and centers the relevant root field. Forms also handle nested object settings more consistently, including showing `npcLevelRange.min` before `npcLevelRange.max`.
- The Studio realm picker is now a compact anchored menu with clearer selection feedback and region or location counts. It also closes more predictably and improves keyboard, screen-reader, and click-outside interactions.
- Studio's generic initial game-state form now provides multiline editors for the existing `beats` and `instruction` fields.
- The State Editor is smoother when typing in large JSON drafts, and text areas with a specified height now keep their intended size.
- Studio forms, file navigation, item counts, and search now use clearer and more consistent typography.
- Studio loads slightly faster due to a smaller initial JavaScript download.
- Creators can now author up to 101 story starts in a game.
- World creators can omit `level`, `healthMultiplier`, `hpCurrent`, and `hpMax` when they want NPC stats to scale when the NPC first appears. Explicitly authored values remain unchanged.
- Content rating overrides now use a compact dropdown directly in the publishing confirmation row, including on mobile.
- Publishing rating rows now leave consistent space for the Details button, and mobile world editing keeps pill tabs and titles aligned within the page, making publishing and editing layouts easier to use on smaller screens.
- Checkboxes, select menus, tabs, labels, inputs, and modals now use more consistent styling, typography, spacing, and responsive sizing throughout Voyage.
- Interface polish improves close-button contrast, system-event text readability, character-row interactions, progression notification alignment, inventory tab scrolling, save-card visibility, and the Return Recap transition.
- World and mod cards, filters, carousels, profiles, and Voyage saves are easier to use with keyboards and screen readers. Focus indicators, selected states, loading information, and navigation labels are also clearer.
- Popup notifications now format backtick-wrapped commands and configuration references as inline code in the primary accent color, making technical information easier to read.
- Android world-view tabs use a simpler layout and respond more quickly to screen-size changes.
- The production navigation bar no longer shows a beta badge, and connecting screens keep the Voyage name and community link aligned with the active product.
- Voyage now displays its own favicon in browser tabs, making it easier to identify at a glance.
- Voyage play and world links can now open directly in the mobile app through supported Android and iOS links.
- Community Guidelines are easier to reach throughout Voyage: the public multiplayer disclaimer now includes a keyboard-accessible link, while footer and menu links open the Voyage-specific guidelines. The outdated Experimental badge has also been removed from the multiplayer disclaimer.
- The public status page now provides clearer details about affected services, AI capabilities, latency, and error rates when Voyage is not fully operational.
Bug fixes
- The AI more reliably moves or removes NPCs and adds, updates, or removes player skills and traits, without tool calls being blocked or mishandled.
- Active-game Studio now reads an NPC's live health data before making changes and can add an NPC to the party without duplicating them or removing existing members.
- NPC companions who are present when the party travels now move with the party and receive updated location, area, coordinates, known status, and last-seen information.
- Off-scene companions remain in the party without being treated as present in the current scene or encounter. NPC location matching also tolerates casing and whitespace differences, preventing nearby NPCs from being incorrectly removed.
- NPCs are placed more reliably in the correct scene, and invalid locations or authored areas are rejected instead of being stored.
- Quests without a remote `questLocation` now advance correctly from the current location, including when `startingArea` identifies that location.
- AI-generated quests with incomplete or invalid placement data are now rejected during generation instead of being silently dropped.
- AI item creation now rejects equipment slots that are invalid for an item's category and returns the valid configured slots instead.
- Characters joining an already-started game now receive the world-defined inventory from existing `startingItems`, including applicable general, trait, story-start, and skill items.
- Damage and healing from the same turn now resolve as a cumulative total, preventing lost overkill or overheal and incorrect revivals.
- Removing an entire stack of an equipped item now consistently removes its bonuses, regardless of how the item was removed.
- Permadeath now produces an AI-generated denouement instead of falling back to a canned paragraph.
- Failed AI-generated location details now preserve a basic location instead of replacing it with fabricated fallback text or reporting the wrong error.
- Provider quota and rate-limit messages no longer appear as generated story text.
- Invalid or deprecated saved AI engines now recover to the current platform default when no closer replacement is available.
- AI action suggestions remain open when another player submits an action. Stale suggestions are cleared and regenerated using the latest context, reducing failed or outdated suggestions.
- Scene-share images generated after rewriting or undoing a turn now depict the current turn instead of a discarded version.
- Newly revealed skill-check results remain in view until roll animations and celebration effects finish. Narration, action input, and scrolling no longer interrupt or obscure the presentation.
- Voice narration now correctly recognizes voice descriptors such as "Voice Tag: Female warm" regardless of capitalization, improving speaker matching and preventing metadata from appearing in dialogue.
- Synced multiplayer narration now uses the host's speed for every participant, including admins, preventing narration drift and cut-off audio.
- Native app audio now stops while the app is in the background and cannot restart until the app returns to the foreground. Voice previews also respect the narration volume setting.
- Withdrawing a multiplayer action before turn processing commits no longer allows an outdated ready state to start the turn. Persistent-room introductions also no longer increase other players' missed-turn counts or contribute to incorrect automatic kicks.
- Rooms no longer remain stuck at startup when a character cutout is unavailable but an existing portrait can be used instead.
- New Game hosts now retain the correct local save identity across browser remounts, without passing their save-slot information to joining players.
- Browse Games and Find a Group now choose the highest-ranked available world that matches content ratings and parental limits, even when a previous selection is no longer eligible. Compatible worlds can be provisioned when needed, and players receive a clearer message when none are available.
- Studio now blocks unsafe full-file writes that could accidentally erase populated live-game data.
- Studio now stops repeated or unchanged tool calls and clearly explains errors caused by stale data, active operations, invalid schemas, malformed requests, or repeated failures.
- Creator Studio now recovers from stale, deleted, or unavailable conversations by switching to a valid conversation and retrying once.
- World validation is now more consistent while editing, saving, and publishing, reporting schema, invariant, and size-limit issues with clearer details, warnings, and field-level errors. Hidden runtime data and stale embedding artifacts no longer block valid publications.
- Runtime Studio edits are no longer rejected simply because generated game content has grown beyond authored publishing limits. Publishing validation and per-record limits remain unchanged.
- Newly created World Editor records now receive valid defaults without changing existing drafts. This includes `complexityType`, `detailType`, and `radius` for locations, `tier` for NPCs, and `completionCondition` for quests.
- NPC `abilities` entries in Studio now accept free text without being mistaken for player ability references, and their rows show descriptive placeholders instead of numbers.
- Studio now validates supported versioned initial game-state JSON after converting it to the current format, preventing older supported versions from failing validation unnecessarily.
- Studio's granular JSON view now handles empty record collections correctly and no longer treats malformed record files as intentionally empty. The projected root also includes the current `heroesVersion`.
- Missing AI instruction files now produce an empty `aiInstructions` object, while malformed instruction JSON is no longer treated as an intentionally empty collection.
- Array entries in Studio initial game-state forms no longer unexpectedly reset or lose temporary editing state when their values change.

- Opening a notification for content that no longer exists now shows a clear message and returns you to the notifications list instead of the home page.
- Published-content notifications now use a player's existing content rating preference until an explicit notification preference is saved.
- Social notifications from system accounts now include the account name when needed, such as "Voyage published a new world."
- Repeated clicks are less likely to create duplicate browser history entries, and navigation can recover more reliably from route errors.

- Persisted sign-in sessions now restore more reliably when authentication is slow or temporarily fails, reducing unexpected anonymous sessions and logged-out states.
- Email verification links now return players to the correct Voyage web surface, even when a link initially opens through an AI Dungeon handler.
- Reopening the Chat panel now preserves the previously selected chat sub-tab unless another tab is explicitly requested.
- Newly received chat messages no longer disappear or revert when a cached game state is applied.
- NPC chat in character details is more reliable on mobile, stays above the keyboard, submits on the first tap, and remains scrolled to the latest message. NPC headers now also display tier ratings.
- Newly generated dialogue portraits now appear as soon as they are ready, and the dialogue box prefers the character's latest portrait.
- Generated portraits remain available while delayed images retry loading, and players can select them later if the first preview attempt fails.
- The New Game character grid now loads display-sized portraits, reducing image memory use and preventing crash loops on iPhones.
- The play screen no longer errors while selecting a background when optional area, location, region, or image data is missing.

- The character creation progress bar no longer repeatedly re-centers or jitters while scrolling on the web.
- Icons no longer wrap or become distorted in Firefox and keep their intended size in compact layouts.

- The mobile map's Re-center button no longer overlaps the Select, Pan, and Brush controls.
