Fortune Scale – 8 Tiers

Fortune Scale – 8 Tiers expands Voyage’s action resolution into a streamlined 8-tier outcome scale, adding meaningful differences between results while keeping the system simple and easy to follow. Results range from Critical Failure through severe failures, near misses, and Costly Success, all the way up through stronger successes and Critical Success. Each tier includes dedicated narration guidance designed to keep outcomes proportional to the action being attempted. Failures do not automatically make capable characters look incompetent, while strong successes improve the quality and consequences of the attempted action without granting unrelated achievements or impossible effects. Costly Success is the first successful tier: the character achieves their immediate goal, but with a meaningful cost, complication, or limitation. From there, higher results move through ordinary success into stronger outcomes with meaningful, directly related advantages. Designed to be fully setting- and genre-agnostic, Fortune Scale can be used in fantasy, science fiction, modern, historical, horror, romance, slice-of-life, and other worlds. This version provides a streamlined alternative to the more detailed Fortune Scale variants, preserving the most important distinctions between failure, close calls, costly victories, ordinary success, and exceptional outcomes without introducing a large number of intermediate tiers.
